Vitamin D moćno oružje u borbi protiv tuberkuloze, ali i drugih zaraza

Vitamin D je važan za čvrstoću kostiju, ali igra i važnu ulogu u borbi protiv infekcija. Jedna nova studija objašnjava da bi taj vitamin mogao biti i vrlo moćno oružje protiv tuberkuloze.

 

Već se dugo zna da su ljudi sa sniženim vrjednostima vitamina D osjetljiviji na infekcije. Zna se, također, i da su osobe sniženog imuniteta – poput zaraženih virusom HIV, koji izaziva AIDS -  osjetljivije na zarazu tuberkulozom. U studiji, o kojoj se piše u časopisu Science Translational Medicine, naučnici su ispitali tu povezanost. Proučavali su na koji su način T-ćelije – vrsta bijelih krvnih ćelije koja se bori protiv infekcija – posebno djelotvorne protiv bakterije koja izaziva tuberkulozu.

"Otkrili smo da je jedan određeni tip T- ćelija – onaj koji izlučuje bjelančevinu nazvanu interferon-gama – bio sposoban aktivirati bijele krvne ćelije, koje su bile zaražene bakterijom tuberkuloze, da ubiju bakterije," kaže Robert Modlin, šef Dermatologije na Medicinskom fakultetu Univerziteta Kalifornije u Los Angelesu. "Pokazali smo da taj mehanizam zahtijeva vitamin D. Što je najvažnije, osobe s niskim nivoom vitamina D u krvi bile su nesposobne pokrenuti taj mehanizam i ubiti bakterije."

U laboratorijskim eksperimentima, naučnici su dodali vitamin D u uzorke krvi koji su ranije imali nizak nivo tog vitamina. To je aktiviralo T- ćelije da unište bakterije tuberkuloze. Modlin kaže da bi ti nalazi mogli rezultirati novim načinima terapije korištenjem vitaminskih preparata za prevenciju tuberkuloze ili kao dodatka liječenju.

U izvještaju o studiji također se napominje da, premda koža normalno proizvodi vitamin D pomoću sunčeve svjetlosti, osobama tamne kože, naročito crncima, potrebno je znatno više izloženosti suncu nego bijelcima, odnosno bjeloputima. No, kako previše sunčanja može izazvati rak kože, Modlin preporučuje vitaminske preparate umjesto dodatnog sunčanja, ali i upozorava da prevelike doze tog vitamina mogu biti toksične.

"Preporučujem da se ljudi posavjetuju sa svojim doktorom opće prakse ili s internistom, možda da im se laboratorijski pogleda kakav im je nivo vitamina D u krvi, te, ako je potrebno, da im se daju vitaminski preparat u odgovarajućoj dozi," kaže Modlin.

Modlin kaže da je slijedeći korak pokretanje kliničkih ispitivanja da bi se saznalo mogu li preparati vitamina D povećati otpornost na tuberkulozu ili druge zaraze.
